I'm curious!

What would you say is the saddest song GACKT has written?

This is more about the lyrics than the sound of the song. What lyrics ring the most sorrowful to you? What makes your heartache for the person in the song? Let me know! Explain your choices and lets have an interesting discussion!

What is your favorite remastered Gackt song?

Mine would be Kagero from the Gladiator Evolution soundtrack. I have to admit, it took some time to get used to it, because it didn't sound as on beat as the original, but I liked how it sounded. I was quite surprised that he remastered it actually! Now I can hear the words being said, and is it just me, or is there now a violin solo in it? :D

One of GA's clever translating members [livejournal.com profile] chikotori  has put up a summary of Gackt's advice to people asking questions, mainly about their personal problems (me - I definitely would NOT want Satan interfering with any of those ha ha).  His answer to the first question about Jesus and sneezing is still cracking me up so hop over to chikotori's LJ for the full thing!

Gackt's answer to the last question (which, I guess, is about whether image is important and whether it should be a priority to look fashionable) is summarized as this:
"If your lifestyle is hade (showy, gaudy, fashionable), then it could be quite interesting if you dress that way too. But if your lifestyle is not like that, it might not match. So you should just match your lifestyle. "

This made me want to ask GA troops:
"How would you follow Gackt's advice and dress to reflect the full extent of your lifestyle and personality?"

I tried to answer this for myself but my imagination just isn't up to the job!  Can anyone do better?

In 2007-08, instead of continuing with his 'Moon Saga' Gackt decided to revisit the concept of his Rebirth album and tour of 2000, Requiem et Reminiscence

(As Gackt has posted the entire story of RR2 on his website, and it is written in the tour programme, these are not spoilers, but they are a condensed version of events, leaving out much of the detail - Gackt also changed his original RR concept, taking his character 'Proto' back to the Second World War)

In the story of 'Proto' a young pianist (named Gackt) at the start of the Second World War attempts to join the German army, but is refused because of his Japanese heritage (before Japan became an ally of Germany) He is in love with a young woman named Elena. Elena is killed by an enemy pilot and Proto in his grief, is allowed to join the German Army as a test subject, he agrees to become a cyborg, half-man, half-machine.

Proto gives up his memories and becomes the 'Shinigami' or Death God of Nibelungen, leading a group of commandos he wreaks havoc on the enemy until his memories return, after visiting his own grave with flowers, he discovers the scientist who created him and kills him, and disappears, possibly to perish in the wilderness.

The story of 'Zero' is that of a young violinist who has two best friends - Asakura, a scientist and Maria - a woman that he and Asakura both fall in love with. 'Zero' enlists in the German army, while his friend Asakura goes to work on the RRProject that spawned 'Proto.'

I was chatting with Capt. Ntkufreak online, and he mentioned having to buy some paper towels. And I mentioned I liked Scott's paper towels, he said he likes Bounty, another friend said Brawny, but I said, ah Scott's is the GACKT of paper towels!

And I think I said this once before to spouse, when I like something very much I say, ah, that is the GACKT of cars - or cell phones - something sleek, beautiful and naturally expensive.

So, what is your favorite thing you could say is the 'GACKT' of it's kind?

When I heard it first, I was just shocked and couldn't think about anything, but later I thought that the piece they played seemed familiar to me somehow... maybe some classic? So I made some research, and thanks to my mother I finally found out what they play on the concert.

I'm pretty sure that it's "Le Cygne" ("The Swan") by Camille Saint-Saëns, but re-arranged for two violins... and not the whole thing - first part (about 1 minute), which YOU-kun plays alone, and then last part (about 1 minute and a half) which they play together.

So now I'm thinking about The Dying Swan and how it fits Sayonara and the whole R&R story... let's think together?

Gackt has long held the belief that an onyx pendant - borrowed from his friend - saved his life. This is why he wears onyx beads, and gives presents of onyx to all his Staff, as well as makes onyx beads available to fans through Dark Side Inhabitants jewelry shop.

Gackt has recently worn a sapphire earring, because that was lost, changed to a red stone.

Do you have a favorite gemstone that you identify with? Or a particular piece from DARTS that you crave?

Gackt's new mic stand for the RR2 Tour

Not the clearest of images, but the only one I've found - The stand comprises a woman's naked torso, headless, armless, with the legs chopped off at the knees.  Your thoughts on Gackt's possible metaphor with this? (not that anyone has to analyze in depth, what's your first reaction? erotic? creepy?)

If any of you have seen the show and want to explain it's use in comparison to the staging and other props, I'd be interested!

Pop quiz!

You're sitting on the bus talking to someone who is friendly but you don't know too well. Conversation turns to music and through talking about different genres, eventually it comes out that you're a fan of the J-rock and pop star, Gackt. "What was his name? Gaaachkt?" your conversation partner skeptically asks. Patient as always, you repeat, yes, Gackt. He's been in the business for about ten years on his own, is known for throwing epic concerts that he pays for by endorsing mints, credit cards, and beauty clinics, among other things.

"Sounds interesting," this person muses, now intrigued, but not yet sold on the Mad Aristocrat's influence. "Who does he sound like?" You reply that he's got quite a variety of songs out there.

"Well," they answer, "Do you have an MP3 player?" Sure enough, you do, your trusty iPod (or Zune, for the Microsoft lot out there) is freshly charged, and you have Gackt's entire library - legally acquired, of course - at your disposal (including "Justified" and "Ghost"), though you do not have any of his PVs.

"I have to get off soon, but let me listen to one of his songs. I like all types of music."

You have exactly enough time to play one song to spread the goodness of Gackt and appeal to the heart and ear of this unsuspecting new listener. Which song do you pick of Gackt's solo career to best demonstrate Gackt's musical prowess and appeal? Be sure to specify which version, for instance if it's a song like "Oasis" which is on both the MARS and Sixth Day albums - we'll also pretend you have nine*nine, so you can pick any of the DVD versions of a song, as well. For scenario's sake, this person doesn't seem to speak Japanese.

I would pick... )

What music would you recommend for Gackt to try?

Even this question stumps me! I'm quite fond of Weiss Kreuz music, including Gluhen, so I would recommend music from that anime. It's easy to listen to, it can keep you active with some songs, and it gives you a sense of nostalgia. At least for me it does lol

Have a Happy New Year, everyone! I'm already on New Year's Eve! :D

If Gackt indulged in sweets, what would he eat?

I think most of us have seen him eating that nummy chou cream on television recently, so that would be my choice, except it would be a cookie pie chou cream, having a crunchy exterior emblazened with pieces of crunchy choco chips.

....oh man I want one >.>

**all remarks are the opinion of those posting. Please be considerate and thoughtful in your responses, we look forward to your personal thoughts on what Gackt's new work means to you.

I was pondering where Gackt was going with the JESUS concept, and knowing that he is revisiting the themes from his REBIRTH album of 2001, down to the Neo-Nazi costumes, I wondered how truly 'new' the sound would be.

As the song opens, we hear the static sound that opens Secret Garden, as well as the accelerating notes from Redemption so the shouts that come after are almost a relief. The melody line, I feel, does not copy any existing Gackt song, and gets you right up to speed. Not being a musician, I can't be specific, but everything sounds tight to me.

I think Gackt sounds great in this song, a comfortable range for him, and the English was a not unpleasant surprise. I usually prefer songs in all one language, but I just think, how odd to just shout out in English in a Japanese song, though I hear this constantly in Jpop-Jrock. I can comprehend the English fairly well.

The song has a great drive, I enjoyed the little layers (machine gun behind the drum beats) and the shouting chorus works for me. (This will be great to drive to VERY LOUD in rush hour traffic)I think you can fit it in the category of Gackt Sound, but it's new enough to me to be enjoyable. I think it's a newer sound than last year's RETURNER.

Now, as for the theme of the lyrics, I've heard some say, this is a song about suicide, but I think that's too simple. I think 'wake me up' and 'take me out' and references to pleading to a prophet (any prophet be they religious or even political, or Gackt himself) are about Rebirth, the desire to move on, move forward, in this life. And Gackt's goading you to 'just do it' don't look to a deity* but find the power within you. That's the personal interpretation I'm sticking with, just going on lyrics and not the visuals.

*I've read a translation of the article in PatiPati where Gackt states the cry 'Jesus' in the song challenges (any) god if they are out there to 'come and help' - so I'm glad I got that right.

THE VIDEO -

Clammy, claustrophobic and dark, if Gackt had to get back to Requiem et Reminiscence, it looks more realized this time. I only wish we could see a little more, as the screen stays quite dark, and I don't get clear shots of GacktJOB. The focus is however, on Gackt and the figure of the man in the Luftwaffe Uniform.

The NAZI reference here is interesting, I don't know if it's intentional that the uniform of the protagonist is grey and not black. The uniforms of the regular Soliders were grey, the uniforms of the Secret Police within the Nazi Army were black - which is what Gackt and GacktJOB are wearing.

The idea of ritual suicide among the military is not exclusive to the Japanese, it was also Roman, and many of the Nazi Army's insignia (standards) harkened to ancient Rome. The scenes in Gackt's JESUS brought to mind the story of the German General named Edwin Rommel (Known as the Desert Fox) the one adversary who was laudable to the winning Allied powers after the Second World War because of his honor toward captured enemy soldiers, a refusal to persecute 'undesirables' by sending them to concentration camps, and becoming involved in a attempted coup on the Dictator Hitler. As he was a popular Hero in Germany, instead of being killed in an execution, his family's lives were to be spared if he agreed to commit suicide, which he did.

This makes Gackt's role as instigator in the video, goading the man to put a gun to his head, an interesting figure. I enjoyed the flashes of the skull through his face, and after so many repeated scenes of the gun to the head, the only way it could have ended satisfactorily *spoiler*

I don't think I asked this question yet. ^^;

...does it really need an explanation? XDD

Art exists as a reflection of nature, but it also reflects human culture. Religion has been a part of human culture since its inception.

For an artist to create work with a religious theme, be it 'Jesus Christ Superstar' or 'The Satanic Verses' is to take certain concepts and put them in a modern context. The purpose of these works are to explore the metaphors and symbols that permeate culture, such as Redemption, Forgiveness and Enlightenment, not to mock them.

To say an artist 'blasphemes' by including a religious figure or a symbol in their work is not only doing disservice to the artist, but the notion of freedom of expression.

It also is a disservice to deny oneself the opportunity, sight unseen or unheard, to find a new concept to agree with, or, to miss a chance to discuss a different point of view in a considerate, thoughtful way.

Every work of art should stand on its own merit, and succeed or fail as it deserves.

But, every musician, painter, composer, writer, and Gackt, is also a person who has the right to explore these themes, in fact, an artist should be lauded for tackling weighty metaphors and challenging their audience.
