gackt_army(Edited version - not intended as direct translation, may contain some errors because we do not as yet, have a complete word-for-word translation, I think it would be a waste of effort to become upset about certain historic aspects or interpretations of history in this paraphrase. And some of your questions may only be answered by Gackt himself.

First section speaks of the downfall of the Third Reich at the End of World War Two, 1945. The Allied troops each took a section of Berlin, the capitol city, and divided it. The narrator speaks of the suffering of the German civilians, (some mention here of the victors taking out feelings of resentment or vengeance on the population - remember the narrator speaks as one who was an ally of Germany)
The author wants to leave behind the history of his beloved friend, whom he inadvertently betrayed, and he wants to make up for this by telling the story, his friend lived and died a man who fought for the future benefit of mankind, and though he became other, he was more human than anyone else in the world.

Asakura Ryuuichi (the author) studied Robotics in Germany before the war, and was then asked to
join on behalf of Germany with a special project. At the end of the war, he was captured by the Allies and investigated, only to be released after a year without mentioning The Project. Those who knew of the project were few, all records and facilities were destroyed before the end of the war. 'This foolish act which trespassed into the realm of God.'
1944.
Saw the Axis powers in Europe retreating to Berlin, hemmed in by the Allied powers. In a desperate move, the Project attempted by means of drugs, and mind control to create super soldiers. The development of robots was in its infancy, machines alone were limited on the battlefield.
The plan became to merge man and machine, men who would look human, but posses not only greater strength, but greater brainpower, to stragetize, have insight and judgment that would exceed that of a normal person.
Patriotic, idealistic soldiers were used for the Project, but some were seized from nearby territories and forced to serve.
(My friend was a part of this, I pulled him into it, I was only thinking of the goal, overlooking what was really important.)
Human Assault Weapon Mark 2
The first cyborgs to succeed were named this. The very first of these was called 'Prototype' or Proto. His appearance was completely human, but his skills and knowledge exceeded any man. But the Proto was lost on the battlefield. Stated Missing in Action.
Now that we had successfully created Proto, we began to work on mass production of Human Assault Weapon Mark 2, it was then I saw the first photograph of Proto, to discover he was my dear friend.
My friend was a German of Japanese descent, we'd been together since our school days, he, and I, and Maria, had their been no war, things would have been different, the friendship between the three of us would have been forever, he and I were friends, rivals, family.
He became Proto because of my betrayal, he was a weapon, and he became known as The Shinigami (Death God) of Nibelungen.
Proto becomes Zero
A guerrilla team was created for Proto, to fight at his side, The 4th Independent attached to the GHOST DIVISION (SS-Panzer) was disbanded on his disappearance. Yet Proto returned, many months later, but was different, changed.
Everything about the man and his will was erased, and the data of Proto written into him, yet on the battlefield, a malfunction caused him to awaken to his former self, the 4th Independant reformed, and named Proto their new leader with the name Zero.
I am ashamed that I made use of him, and turned his feelings against him, I lived entirely for the work, and so began the sorrowful tale...

Date: 2008-11-25 04:27 am (UTC)I notice also that the narrator is not a military man, but a scientist, so he would not wear a General's uniform, like the man in the PV.
And, the man in the PV is not wearing the black uniform of Zero (Gackt) and the 4th Independent (GacktJob) in the video.
Like Gackt's opening film for RR1 - perhaps this man is someone who started the Project. Or, who is following Hitler's orders at the end of the War to kill himself.
We will have to wait and see!
