Haven't we all wondered this, or am I the only one?

I know there must be a legitimate reason for him wearing sunglasses that prevents us from seeing those gorgeous eyes, but I have no clue. I only have my crazy imaginiation logical thinking. :D I can only remember him not having them on during the Music Station performance of RETURNER ~Yami no Shuuen~ last June (the 20th?). Almost a year ago actually! And even then he had on that eyepatch.

So what do you all think is the reason for him wearing sunglasses all the time? Any theory is welcome! ^_^

Personally, I think the eyes are truly the windows to the soul, so maybe he doesn't want people to see inside of him? I know it's quite common here in Japan for people to usually not look into another's eyes. It can be seen as a bold thing to do, like...defiant, or rude? My English is slipping...

Or maybe he's trying to hide the fact that he doesn't wear contacts all the time! *gasp*

Or...since he dislikes bright lights, he wears them. I bet if he had the oppotunity, his entire house would have only candlelights. ^^;

Alright, time to stop babbling.

On Warrate Iitomo, he told the host that since he was a teenager he's had very sensitive eyes and thus wears sunglasses most of the time. =)
He might have astigmatism.

I think the sunglasses are more likely, to cover up the fact that he's not wearing eye makeup.

They can't be to cover up the fact that he's not wearing contacts. Because he almost always is, wearing his blue contacts. If you squint during most of those interviews, you can see that he's still got the blue contacts in, with the dark sunglasses.

We also know his vision is at least a bit off.
Because a few years back, he was talking about how he and You wear the same frames. He also said that You sometimes accidentally grabs his glasses and goes around stumbling into things because the prescription on Gackt's glasses are to weak.

So...yeah.

I became really suspicious of a light sensitive eye condition, around the time they started filming Furin Kazan, though.

Apparently, there was bit of a stink the first time they tried taking photo's of him as Kenshin. Its been a while since I read the article but if I remember correctly;
When they got him in costume, he refused to take pictures without his contacts in. So they had to cancel the shoot for the day.

Its true he did have brown eyes for most of the photo's and all of the series, but I'd bet he just went out and got himself brown tented contacts.

(oh, and lets not forget that rapid blinking, hes forever doing)

Or...maybe we're all reading way to much into it and he's just really likes those contacts. ;p

I think the sunglasses are more likely, to cover up the fact that he's not wearing eye makeup. I concur; I've always joked about it anyway XD

Because he almost always is, wearing his blue contacts.
I suspect his contacts are indeed presription lenses for that very reason. Which sort of bring backs to the astigmatism and the light sensitivity.

When they got him in costume, he refused to take pictures without his contacts in. That; I did not know though I cannot say I am surprised - they're one of his trademarks after all.

It certainly is his most infamous trademark.

Of course, if he is indeed severely light sensitive, all of those camera flashes could actually be very painful without tinted contacts or glasses.

(Being light sensitive myself, I could certainly understand that.)

I do know that actors have to wear custom contact lenses for filming, because with ordinary contacts, you see a fine line around the eyes, and they can float around the cornea a bit, which would show up in an extreme close up. So if Gackt was wearing ordinary contacts, they might not be appropriate for a photo shoot.

apart from all the reasons you people gave (which may be all true in some way imo^^), I remember him talking about it on an episode of domoto kyodai...if I remember correctly, he compared it to the typical veils which always hang infront of ramen-shops and such places, he said something along that if he takes his glasses of, it's like welcoming friends^^
I could search for the clip but I'm not sure if it's still on youtube because I think they deleted alomst every domoto kyodai-episode..

actually,I think that all the things you´ve said are true...the most important reason is that he´s sensitive to bright lights, sometimes when I´m watching videos where he doesn´t wear sunglasses, I can tell from his face that he doesn´t feel good...the thing with candles, that´s true too, right? Everything Gackt says it´s true so we have to believe him! XD

I suspect often he says what he thinks the interviewer wants to hear, or what will take the conversation off on some kooky tangent. As far as his personal life, some of the things he's said contradict each other. Of course, people do change. While I hope he writes a real autobiography someday, right now I just have to be content that his message is in his music and his style.

I know..you never know what´s really true and what´s just a funny made up story or a story that should make audience say "eeeeh??"...it´s a shame

I'm glad he does wear the big specs, a gentleman his age would normally have more crow's feet lines around the eyes. I experienced this sun-blocking benefit myself.
My favorite glass-less video clip is one of his performances of No ni Saku Hana at a high school. He's almost about to start singing, and whips off the sunglasses, which gets a big "ohhh" from the kids.

I agree with groowy_walls almost about verything...make up thingy i s simple, but logic XDDD

Just I laughed about eyepatch too XD because I was like O_O when Gackt appeared in eyepatch, cause few weeks before perfomed on Music Station Laruku with Seveth Heaven and Hyde was wearing eyepatch too (plus some black coat with random tattors and feathers XD XD and Gackt costume was just as well a bit similar like this coat XD) I know Hyde is wearing it more often cause of those punk en ciel perfomances, but he did not wear it while perfoming L´Arc songs before XD) It was like "Is a eyepatch now in? XD"

Yeah, I think the eye-patch must be in-Vogue at the moment. Around that same time, Yasu wore an eye patch in one of the Acid Black Cherry, PV's. :D

As someone who has become Gackt like with eyes and sunglasses...Im going to venture a guess that he has astigmatism and the light with contacts is super bright. I just started wearing them again, and I have astigmatism, and man...I definitely need sunglasses.

Remember, Gackt doesn't have much light (if any) in his home, and I can relate to why again. Having to squint because the light is so bright causes headaches, and when I have my sunglasses on, I dont have to squint (so much.)

I used to wear contacts for astigmatism in HS, and that was, well, many years ago. So they have been around for awhile.

And, I don't recall saying Gackt couldn't afford lighting in his home. He chooses to keep it dark because bright light bothers him, especially if he wears his contacts often I imagine. I know when I have my contacts in at home, I will keep it dark if possible.

In addition to all everyone has said, you also need to take in the idea that no matter how good, bad or sensitive your eyes are, when given long term protection (prescription glasses, prescription contacts, or just wearing sunglasses for a long periods of time), the eyes still belong to a human being.

Humans tend to do the rather nifty (or annoying, depending on your point of view) thing of adapting. What may have started off as a fashion thing or just simply a protection from the summer sun, can turn into a necessity as the eyes become more used to a shaded view of the world and have difficulty adjusting back to harsher or brighter lights in a shorter time frame. The user will therefore feel pain or discomfort and will possibly believe they simply cannot do without the protection. Put into a longer time frame, their eyes will become more dependent on a dimmer shade.

Over time, an original medical condition could also develop (deteriorate) and the sufferer could indeed become more dependent on protection/prescription lenses etc.

Becoming depending from overuse could be one reason, medical condition could be another, becoming even more dependent on top of a medical condition could also be another reason.

Yoshiki is also often seen with sunglasses. Occupation could also be an underlying reason - they are celebraties who rarely get plenty of sleep and good long rest. Relieving strain by using sunglasses (from direct or indirect sunlight, camera flashes, normal lightings) would be a smart thing to do regardless of known previous medical conditions or dependency.

Or you know, he might wear them just for shits and giggles. (Maybe he's in cahoots with Yoshiki, 'hey man, if we both wear sunglasses all the time, maybe our fans will be all omfg Gackt and Yoshiki are so totally doing each other, imagine our scandalous gossip! It'll be like free media attention!')

Haha well, half of it was due to personal experiment. During the summer in Dec/Jan 2007/2008, I felt that the sunlight was very strong. Extremely strong and I really, really, really wanted sunglasses.

I wore a pair for like an hour or two and when I took them off (for like cleaning I think it was) I swore like a bitch and put them back on again. Didn't take them off until I was at home (with the lights off) and the sun was halfway set.

Although my desire for sunglasses was strong, my worry for becoming dependent at a young age might compromise my future. O___o Well, I was worried I'd become too dependent (the word I used at the time was addicted XD) and could become unable to stand taking them off even when indoors.

I live in New Zealand and when I was little, I was taught a bit of Maori culture and the main things that have stuck to me is that you don't put your ass on a table and you don't wear caps indoors. It's rude towards the ancestors - something like that. And with the no caps indoors thing, I somehow kept thinking that also meant no sunglasses indoors as well. So with this belief, I really didn't want to become dependent on sunglasses just in case I hook up with a Maori family and they think I'm a rude barbarian because I sit my ass on tables, wear a cap and sunglasses indoors. XD

My dad used to not wear sunglasses all the time but now he always does when outside. I heard him talk about how his eyes seem to have become more sensitive to light so that's kinda also holding me back on starting with the sunglasses. O_o
