To The Story-
Asakura
I could never distinguish much between right and wrong, being more involved with things and not people. I was not troubled with thoughts of the meaning of life, only how to improve upon it - studying Robotics and travelling from school in Tokyo to the leading centers of research in Germany, I was so delighted that I almost forgot there was a World at War beyond the laboratory.
Yet the War did encroach on my ideal world, in some ways, I was at the very heart of it's evil, twisting the nature of human and machined beyond the laws of God, while working on these projects, I had to be in fear of my own life, from the paranoia of my masters, but as long as I would be saved, I did what I had to do.
I betrayed my best friend, my dearest companion, and I was faced every day with maintaining him in his unreal state of half-human, half-machine, wiped of his memories.
And the reason for my betrayal, my beloved Maria, why I could not even spend time with her, nor tell her of my feelings for her, I was so wrapped up in my work, perfecting my horrible creation.
He may be a cyborg, they may call him Shinigami, Death God, but I am the one who is no longer human, I am the true God of Death, but for all my power, powerless, in this horrible War, which seems to pit God against the Devil himself.
I worked on a major part of the Project, but there were still some areas of the cyborgs design
that eluded me, the technology developed in our laboratories to fuse a human body with a machine was at least fifty years ahead of any other nation, yet this great scientific achievment seemed to be the result of many intellects and not a few accidents, I despaired of running into the same problems which had lost the original Prototype.
During my investigations I found a diary. This was written by my predecessor, a scientist who disappeared, probably killed because of the failure of the Project, and the diary was an account of the creation of the first cyborg!
But sadly, there were more thoughts and insane ramblings written down than helpful information.
He wrote "It is raining, the cold wind and thunder forbodes the coming future, we have become like gods, and people will know us for gods, the tests are now complete, despite failures and sacrifices, our victory and the rise of the Third Empire is at hand! The last subject, Number Four, will become our perfect killing machine."
The means of turing humans into cyborgs, the RR Project was performed on volunteers and other 'draftees' which we referred to as 'the material' Most subjects died due to rejection of the artificial parts, and even those who adapted often suddenly stopped for no discernable reason, still others went berserk and had to put down, and there were a few who went mad and killed themselves.
And the only one left was Number Four, a man who had been involved in the project almost from the beginning, he had begun life as a promising young pianist from Salzburg, when his uiversity closed and war began, he signed up at an elite military school to graduate with top honors. After being promoted to Lieutenant, he joined the Project, but it was only upon the death of his beloved, shot down before his eyes by an enemy plane, that he asked to have his self erased and become a cyborg.
He became Proto, his strengths and intelligence far beyond those of ordinary men, and it was he who first took the name 'Shinigami' and 'Demon of Nibelungen.' Proto was given the duty to command the 4th Independant Tactical Gurrilla Force, with a few human subordinates, yet, the men under his command were also secretly directed to watch Proto for any instability, and it necessary, to destroy him if he went berserk.
This was because Proto had begun to display emotion, even though his human memories had been wiped clean.
It was reported that Proto would at times, call the name of a woman, Elena. This was just before the battle in France, where the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich was destroyed, all the soldiers of the 4th Independent were Missing in Action, with exception of the man who returned with a report.
Before his disappearance, Proto had recalled his lover and along with this renewed sense of loss, became horrified at what he had become, and he left the battlefield perhaps to seek revenge or to kill himself, no one knew what had become of him.
I had a premonition of what might happen to Zero, and his fellow cyborgs.
Each of them had been downloaded with the same programming as Proto, each one of them a time bomb waiting to go off, if their memories were triggered.
Maria's Letter
When Maria received a letter from our dear friend, I assumed that it had been sent from distant lands before he had been taken to become the replacement for Proto, and did not think it important.
I considered the matter finished, with him out of the way, there would be no impediment for Maria and I to be together, I was her protector now.
But this love letter, I was to realize was from Zero, the inhuman, unfeeling cyborg. Despite all my care that the memories of the cyborgs, who I treated at times, like my own children, as they were my creations, were awakening.
I went a bit mad, I thought he had written down the whole sordid story of my betrayal in the letter, I was desperate, but some sense of propriety held me back, I never asked to see his letter.
Yet Maria turned to me, with her gentle face and kind eyes, which was a thousand times worse than any hatred. She said to me,
"He is not dead! He lives, a kind man, with a strong heart that wants to be human, so strong that I can't help but feel, I must be strong too. I don't want him to think badly of me, and you, Ryuuchi, you must not give up hope, you must continue, and live strongly."
And I knew at once that they had shared a connection that I could never hope to break, long ago, in our youth, we had talked about memory and it's importance,
Despite being changed beyond recognition, he remembered her, and she would always remember him, so he would remain human, and live forever in her memory.
I had always been alone before I met them, and for a while, there were two sharing their warmth and attention with me, only now did I realize that I needed both of them, and in coveting her, had lost the friend I held most dear.
Over the next few days I was frantic, He was gone, but Maria still remained, and I was desperate to bring her close once again.
I went to see her one last time, then Zero made his move.
END PART THREE.

Date: 2009-01-05 10:00 pm (UTC)Zero was chosen because of his resemblance to Proto, which makes it easier for the men, cyborg and human to follow him.
Zero however, was downloaded with Proto's basic programming, so he and the other cyborgs will share the same flaw of their memories returning.

Date: 2009-01-06 02:41 am (UTC)The mention of Salzburg is interesting; I'm sure Gackt loves it: Good music, needless to say, the architecture is austere and a bit whimsical at the same time, the air always is clean and crisp, and then there's that amazing graveyard that was shown in The Sound of Music.
