Hundreds of years ago in Japan, in the province of Idzumii, within the walls of Nijo Castle, lived the Lord of Koriyama. This Lord, who was named You, was young and strong, but was struck down suddenly by a wasting sickness, his face became pale, his lively brown eyes dulled, and his faithful retainers wrung their hands in worry.
The Lord of Koriyama was much beloved and people flocked to the castle, setting up camp as near the high walls as possible, up to the edge of the empty moats. The air became perfumed with incense and murmurings of voices in prayer could be heard even within the castle walls, but to no avail, Lord You was now bedridden.
The High Official Chachamaru sat in seiza in his room, with Officers Jun-Ji and Chirolyn. There were many scrolls and tablets before them as they attempted to manage the day-to-day business of the province, but each man was melancholy, distracted by the suffering of their Lord.
Suddenly, Izumi, Lord You's personal attendant, appeared beside the screen; a visitor had appeared at the outer gate who said that he could cure the Lord of his illness.
Jun-ji and Chirolyn's faces brightened at this news, but Chachamaru asked, "Who is he and where does he come from? What are his credentials?'
Izumi blinked, saying he did not know, but the man was so very impressive in appearance, standing very straight and tall, garbed in the finest clothes with a design of lotus flowers, wearing two swords in the manner of a samurai.
Chachamaru sighed, thinking that these were quite meager reasons to allow a stranger to attend their Lord, but allowed the man to be brought to him for questioning.
In the time it took for Izumi to run down the many levels of the castle and into the yard, to the gate and return, Jun-Ji and Chirolyn made Lord You aware of the stranger's arrival and assisted him to dress in a robe the color of daffodils.
Izumi now arrived, followed by a man with pale skin and long black hair, and to everyone's astonishment, bright blue eyes the color of the autumn sky. He introduced himself by the name of Gackt and brought with him letters from the Capitol of Edo where he had served the Imperial Court.
Chachamaru was so impressed he forgave the man for not kneeling and bowing.
"I have heard of your Lord's gentle disposition and generosity for his people, which have made this province rich and the envy of many," said Gackt. "I came to see if I could help."
"I will tell you that we have seen many doctors and priests and even an Onmyoji to cure the Lord of his illness," Chachamaru said, "I suppose that it will do no harm to allow you to see him, but I must ask you to leave your weapons here."
Gackt agreed to these conditions, giving his swords into Chirolyn's keeping and followed the men through the halls into the Lord's chamber.
You was sitting on his bed and greeted the stranger with a smile, asking him to sit on the floor beside him, an honor which made his retainers gasp in astonishment, but You replied, "I like this man's face."
The stranger smiled at this remark and You replied, "I like it more now."
Gackt looked over the young nobleman and at last took Lord You's hand in his own, for the simple reason that he wanted to.
"My Lord, what I have to tell you will be disturbing."
"Go on," You replied, "I'd rather hear the worst and get it over with."
"Your illness has been brought upon you by a malevolent curse, I will have to leave shortly to find its source, but in the meantime, I will exorcise the sickness from your body. To keep the evil spirit from returning while I am gone, your servants should fill the moats with clean water and lotus flowers that I have brought with me should be planted along the ditches."
Gackt asked for his saddlebag to be brought to him, which contained the ritual items needed for the exorcism. He placed camphor in a bowl and instructed Izumi to bathe the Lord's body, while Chachamaru, Jun-Ji and Chirolyn were quick to see to the moats around the castle. There were many hands willing to help and in less than a full day the moats had been cleaned, filled and planted.
Gackt left the castle without anyone seeing his departure and Lord You enjoyed a peaceful slumber, the color returning to his cheeks and the brightness to his eyes. In two weeks he had returned to complete health and everyone rejoiced.
Some time later a message arrived, stating that the source of the curse had been found; the envious Lord of a neighboring province was arrested and sent to the Capitol for trial, his lands confiscated and family banished. Gackt reminded Lord You to tend the lotus growing around the castle and promised to return.
But as long as the Lord of Koriyama lived - as these were many long and happy years - he never saw the strange blue-eyed man again, to his regret. At his death, Lord You was succeeded by his foster son, who gave Jun-Ji and Chirolyn the task of tending the lotus flowers.
On a day in August, when the fragrance of the lotus were at their height, the old retainers noticed two young boys sitting at the water's edge dangling their legs in the water.
When Jun-Ji called to them, they grasped hands and stood at the edge.
"You rascals!" Chirolyn shouted, waving the stick he used to walk with. "That's not safe!"
Both boys turned and Jun-Ji and Chirolyn saw that one boy had eyes of brown and the other had eyes of bright blue.
The boys jumped into the moat laughing, splashing the older men to the skin, and sank without a trace.
The End.
