Bujingai - The Forsaken City is set in a distopian future where nuclear war has devastated the planet, Gackt (with violet hair) is the hero Lau Wong, who must fight his best friend Lei (gentleman with silver hair) to save what is left of the world,  also in the image, his mentor and 'love interest.' named Yohfa.

The 'single-shooter' game has Lau as the only playable character, he is of course, an amazing swordsman who can run up walls - at the time of it's release in 2003 (US release 2004 on the PlayStation2)  the game featured state-of-the-art graphics, most noteably in Lau's flamboyant costuming and 'frenetic battle-scenes' - an added feature are interviews with Gackt on providing his voice and motion-capture, as well as a way to switch from playing Lau to Gackt himself.

A nice touch is the extra points you can gain for fighting with style.

Taito who created the game was later purchased by Square Enix, who made Gackt into another red-headed game avatar in the spin offs of their most popular title - Final Fantasy VII

While the story and script somewhat suffer compared to most games of its genre, the beautiful art and character design was very creative and probably Bujingai's strongest asset. A rainbow of colors in nearly every stage, enemy, even Lau's more simple attacks and moves were flamboyant and dazzling.

A visual fan book was released around the same time as the game.

Fans of Bujingai or even anyone interested in the concept art behind games might be interested. I have it and it's in full color, with a few pages dedicated to each of the main characters and their development, the countless unique enemies, settings, and so on. Also an interview with the producers in the back of the book, including Gackt and I believe a few of the other voice actors, though it's in Japanese so I'm at a loss to translate.

Oh, that would be hot! Alright - I'll scan the translation and the sheets for Lau as well as any artwork, most of the book is taken up by monster concept design but there's a substantial amount of Lau. :)

Thanks for the detailed description: I'm particularly struck by extra points for style and the ability to switch to Gackt himself. Voice of machine: "Hey, mortal, is your super-hero game character letting you down with its uncool methods of destruction? Switch to all-defeating J-rock god for the ultimate in style power!"

Yeah, and the prizes should be world peace and silver jewellery.

if I remember I think I have some more images from Bujingai. I'm not sure if everyone's gotten them already of course. If you're interested I can dig them out and post them here.
