*spoiler* for the film
Now last night my sister, who this past year has become a martial arts aficionado brought me a CD she ordered from Netflix, and I had to laugh because it was 'tada' MOONCHILD, Gackt's film from 2002, he wrote and starred in this tale of a child brought up by a vampire to become a gangster in a future Asian distopia.
It's eminently
watchable, very stylish, with moments of humor and pathos, it crams a lot of plot into it's running time of under two hours and if I fault anything it's not the story or the acting from it's neophyte stars (Gackt, Hyde, Wang LeeHom) but that the film meanders away from the protagonists Kei (Hyde) and Sho, (Gackt) and what I would view as the heart of their relationship (latter part of film) is told and not shown, alas.
I appreciate that Gackt wanted to play the younger character, (in braids) allowing himself to come off as goofy, vulnerable and childlike and gave the vampire role to Hyde. (here with blond hair)
But check the absurd surreal fun of the fight scene, and if you've got a spare Saturday and some popcorn, watch
