Word and image: Autumn grasses 5 - eupatorium

In keeping with the misty season of its flowering, this plant, eupatorium fortunei, has the common name mistflower.   A native of China, it soon became established in Japan, both in the wild and cultivated for its medicinal properties.  The literal translation of the Japanese name is "purple trousers" and, perhaps for this reason, its poetic associations are male.
