I'm outside of the Twilight hype, with the exception of knowing what the books and movie are because of the howls of agony from my flist, I've read some sections of the book online, and it reads like the bad fanfic I'd skim, but that's just my opinon.

The poor Vampires, if you want to read purple prose about their Proto-Sparkliness I suggest Anne Rice, if you want to read good Vampire romance, I'd suggest Chelesea Quinn Yarbrough.

I'll agree with the "bad fanfic" comment. Beyond that, I'm afraid I'll go on a ceaseless rant about the series that may offend some of its fans...so I'll stop there ^_^

In any case, speaking of vampire fiction, if you do want some other pre-sparklies that is something other than Anne Rice's flowery writing and Lestat-centric everything (though, she does have a knack for great character development), Poppy Z. Brite is a good one to read (given an open mind and a stronger stomach, in some cases).

My roommate also claims that Tanith Lee is great, though admittedly I've never read any of her stuff.

To someone who has read all four of the books, and who only liked them for Edward (YAY! Edward!) I can tell you that they ARE bad fanfic like material. HP is far superior in my opinion and the movie just looks terrible...but, I'm a dork and I'm going to see it anyway. =.=U But, I do think her other book, "The Host" is really much better. At least good fanfic like material! =P
